Five stars

We recently ventured out to see Uncle Vanya at the Sydney Theatre Company, and we're pleased to say it was a delight from go to woah. While we think Hugo Weaving stole the show with his breathtaking performance, it must be said that Cate Blanchett nailed the understatement required for her portrayal of Yelena. Andrew Upton's adaptation is clever, and though criticised for taking out some of the heaviness, we believe this has made the play relevant and appropriate to Australian audiences. With stellar performances all round, it left us stunned. Image credit: Lisa Tomasetti, 2010.
